Tomorrow Starts Today: Strengthening the Filipino American Mentorship Pipeline – Bay View
August 2, 2014 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am
8:30 am – 10:00 am Bay View
As young professionals, we recognize the rising need for critical mentorship. Filipino Americans represent the second largest Asian American group in the country yet less than half possess a bachelor’s degree or higher. Ultimately contributing to this disparity is a lack of critical mentorship within the educational pipeline (high school teachers, counselors, professors) which results in psychosocial and academic challenges for young people. To address this gap, the Lakas Mentorship Program and the Philippine American Youth Organization provide an opportunity for youth to explore narratives of de-colonization and holistic empowerment. In this workshop, members from our programs will share strategies on developing youth leaders through social justice inspired programming in the Southern California area and facilitate a discussion on youth development. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of mentorship and learn how to apply principles of mentorship to their work.
