August 2, 2014 @ 10:15 am - 11:45 am
10:15 am – 11:45 am Point Loma I A
This roundtable focuses on the historical contributions, experiences, and behind-the-scene activities of Larry Itliong. In 1929 Larry began organizing the farm workers. For the next four decades, Larry was leading the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) and joining the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), led by Cesar Chavez, to create the United Farm Workers of America (UFWA). He is nationally known for leading AWOC and initiating the Delano Grape Strike on September 8, 1965, in Delano, California. What started as the Delano Grape Strike became a five-year boycott of table grapes that exposed Filipino and Mexican farm worker’s struggle. The Larry Itliong Foundation on Education (LIFE) provides displays, exhibits, and educational materials for individuals and groups, community organizations, institutions, and schools on the contributions of Larry Itliong.
