Filipino American Psychology: Microaggressions, Colonial Mentality, and Mental Health – La Jolla

August 2, 2014 @ 10:15 am - 11:45 am

10:15 am – 11:45 am    La Jolla

This panel will discuss three general areas: (1) colonial mentality (CM) as commonly expressed by Filipino Americans, and how CM is related to various indicators of mental health and psychological well-being; (2) the mental health concerns of Filipino American young adults, especially in the college population, as they are impacted by acculturation, cultural values and beliefs, intergenerational misunderstandings, ethnic identity, and individuation on the emotional, social, mental, and academic well-being; and (3) the impact of severe mental illness on Filipino Americans, as well as the need for service fields – such as mental health care systems – to familiarize themselves with this population in order to ethically and effectively address the needs of Filipino Americans.
